What the Heck?

I was crusing the isles at my local mega mart and found this. It was near the other processed meats in a can and was only 59 cents. I picked it up and looked closer.

I thought "what the heck is 'Potted Meat Food Product"? I had an uneasy feeling but I decided to look on the back. My worst fears were confirmed.

This is what it says - INGREDIENTS: MECHANICALLY SEPARATED CHICKEN, PORK SKIN, PARTIALLY DEFATTED COOKED PORK FATTY TISSUE, PARTIALLY DEFATTED COOKED BEEF FATTY TISSUE, VINEGAR, LESS THAN 2% OF: SALT, SPICES, SUGAR, FLAVORINGS, SODIUM ERYTHORBATE AND SODIUM NITRATE.

That's worse than reading all those chemical names. What exactly is "Mechanically Separated Chicken" and "Partially Defatted Cooked Fatty Tissue"? Never mind, I really don't want to know. I think it is all the stuff they can't put in hot dogs.

Another clue is the wording "Food Product". That means the FDA won't let them say "meat" without saying that it really isn't meat.

Caveat Emptor - read the labels.

I have also long been wary of "cheese products," such as Velveeta.
Bring in Upton Sinclair. This is worthy of him.

Right after leaving your house I went out and bought a case of the stuff. I made a macaroin, cheese and potted meat food product casserole. Want to try some?
Just kidding. I've always said that the one thing I would never eat would be insects, but I think if I had a choice of chocolate covered ants and that stuff, I'd choose the ants.
